I'd think for now that'd be the best place. I wonder if Mt. Lincoln is in - it's almost always a zoo but the ice is good when it's good. The stuff in the San Juans tends to take a bit longer to set - and the Ice Park doesn't usually open until after Christmas. Let me also get you contact information for Matt Wade who's a guide down there. I'm not at my home PC so I can't locate it but will get you the link ASAP.

Lincoln is coming around, the Bowling Alley has ice in it, but it won't stand up to tons of traffic. I'm going to walk the tools up to Three Tiers tomorrow in Ten Mile Canyon if the weather is decent. Anyone care to join me?

Not true....there's lots of ice up in the high country. Most people don't know about it cuz its not in any guidebooks (for good reason). Obviously they require long (i.e. fun) approaches. Also, the ice park almost always opens around Dec 14th.

Good info, ice. Maybe that's why the ice stays so good down there - no one knows about it!

I thought the ice park didn't open until New Year's? Or does that also change depending upon conditions?

No they always open by mid december. Its actually a fixed date unless there are really bad conditions and they will put it off a week. The last few years they've opened around the 8th of dec, but, last season they put it off cuz we had warm temp till the end of nov. They are usually turning on the hoses by thanksgiving and making ice. It only takes a couple of weeks to make it climbable....
