Locations of mountains in films

by Diego Sahagún » Wed Sep 22, 2010 11:14 pm

The other day I was watching The Hanging Tree on TV and liked the mountains at the start of the movie. Then I found that it was filmed in the Oak Creek Wildlife Area, Washington State.

Today I've been watching Shoot Out. Those are its locations:

Put or ask the locations of mountains in films that you've watched

"The hills are alive,
With the sound of music..
With songs they have sung,
For a thousand years.

The hills fill my heart,
With the sound of music.
My heart wants to sing,
Every song it hears ..."

A few films from the Teton area:

Shane-arguably the greatest Western ever made.

The Big Sky-Montana's wasn't big enough

The Mountain Men-arguably the worst movie of its kind.

Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom-The pickup chase scene was on the Gros Ventre road.

Jubal

Spencer's Mountain

Any Which Way You Can

Rocky IV

Some great Ski Movies

"Wings of Courage" - British Columbia, Canada (an 1995 early digtial 3D movie starring Tom Hulce, Val Kilmer, Eliz. McGovern).

"K2" - Also British Columbia

"The Grey Fox" - Idaho, USA.

The Alabama Hills at the base of the Southern Sierra Nevada Mtns in California is legendary for the number of movies, television shows, commercials filmed in and around its rocky outcrops. A few of the movies that were entirely filmed in the Alabama Hills:

"Gunga Din" (1939) - Starred Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks

"Rawhide" (1951) - Starred Tyrone Power & Susan Hayward

"How the West Was Won" (1962)

The number of movie scenes and television commercials filmed among the "Hills" in endless, including Clint Eastwood's "Joe Kidd", the recent "Ironman" films, and John Wayne westerns.

But I see that the Coen Brothers will be remaking True Grit at this location with Matt Damon and Josh Brolin:

Not a film, but my eldest has a manga (Japanese graphic novel) set in Chicago with the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop.

I wish.

We have a kids movie here called 'Alaska' made in 1996 about kids trying to find their father who went down in a plane by Devils Thumb. It's mostly shot in B.C. with some shots in Alaska. The scenery is nice in the movie.

Damn I'm getting old. Filming of True Grit was a big deal when I was growing up nearby (Paonia), but I'm thinking it was more like the late 60's.
