Forget WI 7... Here comes WI 10!!!

Holy crap... Will Gadd and Tim Emmett climb a WI 10 (thats Water Ice 10) route! I don't think I've ever heard of anything harder than WI 7, and I've only heard of a few of those. Crazy!

Check it out:

It's interesting because in my experience, the grade goes up not only as the ice gets steeper, but also as the ice gets worse/harder to protect. This route is entirely bolted, but ...

Ice climbing @ x games

I was watching the x games in aspen, co and got to wondering why thet don't form some ice there on the resort and have an ice climbing comp as part as the x games. If they can make those fancy half pipes and whatnot they can sure come up with some kickass ice walls.

Do sleeping bags need to be made different?

I was thinking about this as I slept in my bag a few nights ago. Assuming most folks do not sleep on their side the entire night, the bottom of the bag is really a waste. The down or other filling on the bottom seems to be doing little. It seems to me the biggest need of the bottom is to keep the ground from sucking your heat out so maybe we should have the ...

plane air pressure

was talking to this guy the other day, very familiar with flying. so he said the cabins are pressurized. which i knew. but he said they are pumped up to about the same pressure as you would find at 10,000 feet. which is why its so dry up there and your ears pop. complicated discussions about humidity (rh, ab, h20vap, dew pt etc) aside. i was thinking they must pump raw oxygen in there, because ...

A Poem

so i had to write a poem for english class so i thought you guys might like it, feel free to critique, hopefully I'll learn something :D

If you go to the mountains just to go,
Or leave at four, just for the alpineglow,
Even if the conditions could make a grown man cry.
Or if on the long slog up you ask, "Why?",
but still ...

Best adventure books we've never heard of

I imagine that a lot of us enjoy reading books about climbing and mountaineering. I also imagine that a lot of us enjoy reading books about other adventure-type activities. What are some good ones (either mountaineering or other) that are less well known yet still good?

For example, I just finished reading Silent World by Jacques Cousteau (about the early days of the aqualung and SCUBA) and thought it was fantastic, yet I'd never heard ...

WI 7+

Hey guys,
So i came across this article of a fairly new route put up that was given a suggested rating of WI 7+.
See article here ---> http://www.climbing.com/news/hotflashes/new_austrian_ice_route_given_wi7/

As i have only climbed the occasional WI5 (with relatively fat ice) i cant really fathom what a 7+ would even feel like. To my understanding a WI 5 is very steep and sustained with generally good ice where as a 6 would be steep and ...
