Photo disappeared

by Andrey Pramatarov » Tue Nov 25, 2014 7:26 am

Hi to all,
Yesterday I uploaded a photo in mountain range RILA in Bulgaria. Somehow it disappeared today!
How is it possible? I had not erased it.

Yes that photo, as well as anything else submitted in the past couple days was deleted this morning when the site maintainer was forced to replace the entire database with the backups, which were last updated probably a few days ago. Just re-upload the image and it will be fine.

Judging by the timestamps of the images that are currently in the system, I estimate that less than half a day has been lost; more precisely, no more than half a day up to Nov 24, 2014 11:26 am EST. So, anybody who posted something in that period should consider posting it again. That includes making a comment or responding to one, signing a log and even voting on something.

As for the forum, I'm not sure about that. I'm guessing that all forum messages posted in the same period mentioned above got lost as well; however, the timestamps for forum messages appear to be out of sync with those on the main site, and that might make it a bit harder to figure out if a message you've recently posted in the forum was during the lost period. Obviously, those that remember what they posted in the forum can check if all of it is still there, but otherwise... well, if it's gone and you don't recall posting it, then it's gone forever. Then again, if you don't miss it, it doesn't really matter that you repost it, does it?

Matt, you ought to know better that it was not the past few days. Rgg explained this well. :)

How am I supposed to know when, and how often the backups are updated?

Because it's a daily thing. I told you you. Don't sweat it, a lot of stuff was going on that night when we were chatting.

I think it's a small misunderstanding. "Daily" doesn't mean that there's only one copy made each day and then overwritten when the next day's backup is made. Any decent backup system keeps various versions going back in time, typically something like the last seven days, plus the last 4 weekly backups plus the last X monthly backups. In the context Josh posted, daily means that there is a backup done every day. How many are kept is something sysadmins can argue fiercely over while drunk.

Sorry, none. Ivory Tower discussions are not as exciting as some might think. It's Ivory, after all.

Don't believe him, Toxo! In addition to lots of pictures of sexy female elves, there is this in the Ivory Tower:

In the Ivory Tower a little birdie wrote:That pic was so, so hot. Honestly, fellas, if I weren't happily married, I would run off with that girl right now. As a middle-aged man, I prize discretion and emotional and mental stability, so how could I not want to throw everything away for a sweet girl like Daria?
"Alcohol is like love. The first kiss is magic, the second is intimate, the third is routine. After that you take the girl's clothes off."

Couldn't have been me. It's been years since I described myself as "middle-aged". :-)

Definition of middle aged: "Ages 20-45".
