The rivalry between California and Colorado climbers is a long standing affair. The California delegation definitely won a round when Bob Kamps and Dave Rearick bagged the first ascent of The Diamond, on Longs Peak.



Colorado did get a bit of revenge when Jim Erickson did the first free ascent of Insomnia Crack, at Suicide Rock. Of course they broke it up into two pitches, so I don't think it should count. It's half a rope even done as one pitch ...

A long-standing good-natured feud has developed over the years for sure, but some folks will wish you dead if you have an opinion. So look out for the "s#*t bombers".

Harvey Carter still says that those Yosemite boys didn't know how to climb. (At least he did last time I listened to his rantings!)


I personally like both places (apart from the taxes in CA). Alpine climbing is better in CA. Ice is better in CO. Skiing is better in CO. Rock is generally better in CA. (Diving is definitely better in CA!)

CA vs CO. 18 years I have lived in the former, 1 year in the latter. I am 7th generation Californian, so I am partial to the Golden State. They both are too different to compare effectively. All I know is that I will most likely return to my "home ranges" after college. This place is great, but I feel like there is more variety in CA.

It's all really quite simple, you know. California has The Needles, and Colorado does not.

Some yes, some no. This of course detracts in no way from the amazing quality of the rock climbing there.

You can walk to the summit of El Capitan too, should you choose...
