the two peaks are north of vermont and new hampshire. It is above a famous trout stream and is perhaps
5 miles from the Appalachian trail.

Neither Quebec nor the white mountains, but you are pretty close. It is in the U.S.A. in a state whose name is the same as an old county of France, The counts of this former province had to defend against the dukes of normandy and brittany. The Plantagenets came from the former county.

Whitetail suggest Mt. Katahdin. Close but this peak is prominent when viewed from Katahdin if that helps.
