They were out and hungry yesterday heading up to Piute Pass and in Humphreys Basin !

Didn't see any in Tuolumne or near Cathedral on Saturday though.

Just finished the whole High Sierra Trail from Giant Forest to Whitney, Aug 1-9. Minimal mosquito presence made the trip a pleasure. Other hikers reported some in the Kern valley but we found very few. Very hot, very cold and continuous windy weather may have some influence. If the wind dies and the weather is normal they could pick up.

Does anyone know the skeeter situation at Sonora Pass?

It's gotta be gettin late in the season. . .

We've had way more skeeters than usual here in Crowley this year, possibly because of the wet start to summer that we had. We ofter have a dozen or more on each window of the house in the evening, and one of the little ones is bouncing around on my computer monitor as I type this.

Recent tests found West Nile Virus in mosquitos trapped here in town, so the local skeeter guy was going to do a little spraying to knock down the adult population. He showed me the ones that carry the virus, and they are kinda small. Maybe the big ones are not a problem.

They were few and far between up in Onion Valley this last weekend. Gettin' colder at nights (high 30's) is helping the cause

I was in TM two weeks ago. the mosquito problem was non existent

Got bitten this past week at Crowley, Hilton Lakes, Convict Canyon...but then, insects wait for me. The Venerable Mosquito speaks: "Gather round, you young ones; this is a memorable day. Once in a lifetime, the Leslie comes. Generations come & go, unfulfilled; but you, you're the lucky ones. Tomorrow, you shall feast!" And so it came to pass. And so, I anoint myself in CalaGel.

Convict Canyon was spectacular & uncrowded on a day that was supposed to be a washout. Somehow, 100% cloud cover & mutated into blue skies & mild temps. What a way to end our Sierra season...& another reminder that we need to move ourselves over the divide.

Just spent close to three weeks up there, from Yosemite to whitney and as far as the JMT is concerned, barely a bug. barely used the deet––the best thing about going late in the season (and now has to be even better) . . . tasty crickets, though.
