I was chased by a mother moose in Yellowstone when I was 5 or 6 :D . Apparently I thought the baby was just another animal to pet, and out came the mother, full gallop, until my father grabbed me and scared the moose into stopping and turning. Quite the near death experience. Also woke up to a Bison sleeping against the door of the tent, had to play the waiting game. All in all, been quite close to some beasties, and I love it.

Wolves (and dogs) are in your face poopers - leaving their scat on the trail. A study was done in Spain. I have been seeing the same thing with coyotes.

So if a scatologist studies poop, what does that make a scat singer? Was Ella a crappy singer?

Well, I've seen red fox, black fox, coyotes, a bobcat (once), lots of bear (face to face with one near Cascade Falls, another scraping dinner out of a rotten log near my tent at Dorst Creek), moose (including the big dumb male who bluff-charged me in Arapaho National Forest), marmots, pika, big horn sheep, mountain goats, ptarmigan, and Boy Scouts. :)

I have been on foot, up close and quite personal with many wild creatures, including lions in Africa and grizzlies in Canada...but a close encounter with a rattle snake on a crack climb in southern Utah, was just about the most interesting...took away a needed (for me anyway) finger jam...

Wolverine a quarter of the way up talus toward east ridge of Buck Mt., Tetons, July 05, traversing in and out below us. Cdn't identify it--not a bear, very large-long tail. Rangers at visitors' center--three in sequence, ending with resident biologist--i.d.'d and confirmed it.

I forgot to also mention pine marten. Beautiful, sleek, and ill-tempered. :)

Pine Martens, Fishers and Mink are the most difficult animals for me to spot and then visit with for any length of time in the Canadian Rockies, and thus I am most fascinated with them. I have seen way more bears, for much longer periods, particularly if they are eating berries. My best exchange was on return from a solo trip, I met one half way across a man made bridge over glacier melt. He froze. I froze. Might as well been a cartoon. Then he turned and ran. If you do spot one, it will normally be in a tree and will play "hide n seek" if you try to take a photo. Good luck with that! I do see their skulls more than I see the creatures themselves. Their teeth are impressive. The smallest carnivore clan we have up there I believe.

I have seen coyote, black bear, bison, mountain goat, deer, porcupine, bobcat, and had a cow moose walk within 3 feet of me . I was going out,she was going where I was just at, no room to spare, so I step to the edge of the trail and she walked by.

Got this photo while feeding the horses last week. Three turkeys were behind the barn pecking away at the ground, all hens. I grabbed my telephoto and started shooting as they began to wander into the brush out of my sight. The last the of the three did this little still shake and stretch maneuver and I got her at the peak of her stretch just by luck.
