Pico de Orizaba - traverse of crater rim

Moving rightwards onto easier ground after a short descent of the awkward buttress at the top of the Glacier Este (a.k.a Glaciares Orientales). Though not technically difficult (perhaps 40 metres traversing at Scottish Grade II-III), we were grateful we had brought a 20m rope with us; the runout below was considerable! Nov 2008.

We weren't quite as brave/foolhardy as you may think. Sensibly, we did each have an ice axe - a rather esoteric telescopic Stubai ice axe and one trekking pole apiece. See my profile picture for details of the axe. Even so, we were aware of how isolated we would have been had there been a slip down the gully.
