Pinatubo: Indigenous fashion and footwear

The indigenous Aeta fled to the mountains as the conquering Spaniards settled in the Philippines. To this day, the hills surrounding Pinatubo is one of their last strongholds. Our guide was an Aeta. For a grueling 2-day trek, besides his shirt, hat and shorts, he only packed a lighter with smokes and a machete tied around his waist with twine. No shoes, no food, no sunblock, no water... He showed me how to shake ripe papayas out of the papaya tree and I watched him steal and eat the bird eggs right from a nest. When I saw a large 3-foot long lizard just by my side, he ran back towards me and tried to catch it. Meanwhile, I'm wearing shoes and packing a Dell, haha. Needless to say he was much better adapted to the environment than me.
