pocket gopher
not something you see everyday - a pocket gopher (Thomomys talpoides) on the rocky surface of the summit of Mount Peale (La Sal Mountains, UTAH). As it scampered across the snow, I thought at first it was a vole. Note the heavy claws on the front legs. I saw no sign of burrowing (no soil!).
