Re: love - hateI am not particularly scared of snakes, but seeing this one at the base of the climb sort of weirded me out. I was real, real careful where I put my hands and feet for the rest of the day.
He was small - about a foot long when uncoiled and had a small diameter. But he certainly had a rattle . . . This weekend we saw two juevenile rattle snakes; I've never seen one at the Pinnacles before this, although I know they are common there.

Re: love - hateJen saw him first. What was really scary was that Ron and Jenny's 4 month old was sleeping on the other side of the rock. Jen quietly moved the baby, taking care not to alarm Jenny who was beginning a climb.
We didn't say anything to Jenny until she had walked off.

You're kidding !I worked for a whole season in Pinnacles back in the 90's, and I didn't see one snake. There seemed to be a lot of them along the Kaweah River inside Sequoia NP, however.
Greetings! My wife & I reside in Arizona. My wife has a real fear of snakes. Where she comes from, SNAKES live in trees. She didn't think abouit looking down on the ground, when she found her first Diamondback here in AZ. I love your California photos!

Re: You're kidding !I'd never seen any snakes at the Pinnacles before this one, but other folks I know who climb there a lot say they have seen a lot of them. I am lot more cautious now...
