Red Castle LakeMy USGS map labels this lake as Red Castle Lake (11295). Upper Red Castle Lake (11542) is out of view to the left. The two very small lakes in the picture are not given any names or elevations.

Actually, I always get confused when I'm
"bombarded" with all those pictures of lakes,
basins and peaks emulating from the Uintas.
I always figured that the larger one, shaped
like "lungs," was indeed Red Castle Lake,
but I wasn't positive until I looked at a
topo and saw your posted comment.

Was just reading in my High Uinta Trails book that at 175 acres, Red Castle Lake is the largest natural lake in the Uinta Mountains.
Upper Red Castle Lake sits on a bench about
1/2-mile south of the main lake. There is no
trail but you can follow the stream up to it.
Upper Red Castle Lake lies at the NW base of
Wilson Peak.
Is that BALD Mtn. above the lake in this pic?

Some books say that, but I believe Grandaddy Lake is bigger (it depends on who's measurements you use, but on the map it appears so). Red Castle is prettier though.

The information I posted was taken from a
book published (in SLC) in 1974.
Agreed that Red Castle is very pretty !!
I've had boy scouts report that Grandaddy
Lake is a bit larger in early summer, and
then becomes boggy on the southeast side.

Re: Red Castle Lake...Larry, I've got the same book as well as the updated 1993 edition and read the same thing just a few days ago. I just looked at Red Castle Lake and Grandaddy Lake side by side and would say it's a tough call.
As to Bald Mountain, it's on that ridge, but waaaay down there, so I don't think it's visible.

it's extremely hard to accurately judge the
size and comparative distance of landforms.
Especially after "overdosing" on saltine

Re: Red Castle LakeI think the key word there is 'natural' lake. If you go to the outlet stream which leaves Grandaddy Lake, there seems to be a dam made of boulders there. I'm no expert but it looks man-made. That would leave Red Castle to be the largest of the natural lakes.
