Relief Peak's NW Ridge

Relief Peak's NW Ridge

Such a promising class 1-2 hike until the rocky section just before the redish/brown rock. A 30ft loose class 4-5 notch blocks progress. Is there a way around? Relief Peak is the small bump in the background, June 29th, 2006.

I remember that notch.

I've been up in the Grouse Creek Valley (between Relief Reservoir and Relief Peak) and up to the peak twice way back in 1963-1964. I camped at the tarn up the slope to the right as you go up the valley to the face of Relief Mountain. It was when I tried going around the tarn from right to left, behind it, thinking I could get up to the peak from there, that I ran into the notch. For me, it was impassable. Beautiful view, though, of the Lewis Lakes.
