Remembrance Day Service

Remembrance Day Service

A rather crowded shot taken this last Sunday during the remembrance day service on Great Gables summit. This annual event was witnessed by between five hundred and one thousand hikers who impecably followed a short sermon with two minutes silence. Following WW1 two local landowners gave a large chunk of mountain land to a local fell climbing club as a memorial to their fallen comrades. Then in 1923 the land passed into the ownership of the British National Trust. Ever since there has been a service held on trhe nearest sunday to 11th November. This service disn't just commemorate the servicemen lost in conflicts, but also paid thanks to the ability to roam freely on mountain lanscapes. The world over we all need access to such places.
