Ohlone  Sucess!

Was supposed to lead a small group from the Visitor's Center. Got all confused! Didn't see them until I was on my way back from the top. It was a surprisingly easy hike. It was over before I knew it.

Ohlone trail is simple enough to follow once you're on it.

On the return trip, I decided to mix it up and take a different trail. And ended up on private land. Oops. Ran into two separate cars driving down the gravel road who stopped to tell me the error of my ways. Thankfully, they were understanding since I was on my way down and had taken a different way up. (Still not sure where the Private Property sign was that I had missed?)

Barring my terrible logistical ineptness and misguided route over private land, it was a fantastic day. The spring flowers were in bloom, everything was green, and the whole place seemed to be happy from the previous day's rain.

Rose Peak  Sucess!

I started this two day hike from Ohlone college. First up was Mission Peak/Sunol/Rose Peak. After spending some time on top of Rose Peak, my friend and I came down a bit and found a suitable campsite. Next morning we headed for Del Valle, with several detours along the way which my friend wanted me to see. Overall, a very nice hike and definitely not hard for a fit hiker! I don't know the total miles...I am guessing 25+!

Rose Peak via Del Valle  Sucess!

Was foggy on top and could barely see anything. Wandered off the trail a bit, into private property. Ended up doing a total of 24.68 miles.

Going back again via Sunol to sign the log on the peak.

Great hike!

Passed thru here with Michael and Joe. Our primary goal was Murietta Falls in the spring!

Been here several times  Sucess!

Did the Rose Peak/Discover Peak double from Del Valle, also ran up Rose while doing the full Ohlone trail as a dayhike.

Sunol to Rose Peak  Sucess!

Ran/Hiked the Ohlone trail from Sunol to Rose Peak, though used the Camp Ohlone road/backpack trail to shave a little time and climbing. Time to Rose Peak was 2:05. Knackered on the way down and took nearly 2 full hours for a total of 4:05 including 10 minute summit break and 5-10 minute detour to Maggie's for water.

Two questions for the page:
1. The detour through "insult gulch" around mile 7-8 feels unnecessary. Anyone know why the trail does not follow the obvious route of the ridge?
2. Anyone drink Maggie's campsite water untreated? A fellow hiker once told me it's safe but the park signs indicate otherwise.

Sunol out and back  Sucess!

Long hot day on the Ohlone trail. Saw a rattlesnake basking on the trail, two other non-venomous snakes, a fox, and lots of squirrels.

From Del Valle  Sucess!

From Del Valle with aj and tang. 4 hrs to summit at slow pace. 2 hrs return at a brisk pace (some jogging). Additional 4hrs for aj and tang since they got lost and aj had knee pains.

From Sunol   Sucess!

Absolutely perfect day for a hike. Cool with clear skies made the trek really enjoyable. Followed Camp Ohlone Road to trail to Backpack Camp then followed ridge (Ohlone Trail) all the way to the summit.

On the way back down I took the trail labeled "Bluff Trail" on the Ohlone Wilderness map to connect back to Camp Ohlone Road. Ran into some land owners who said the SF water district land was closed back there and I was risking a ticket, but the Ohlone Map (the one you get as the permit) says just to stay on trail in SFWD land, it says nothing about it being closed to foot traffic. Figured they were just saying things to keep people out. There was no signage saying otherwise either. Until I got to the gate on Camp Ohlone Road as I was hiking out where there *is* a sign saying no trespassing, etc. So not sure what the 'rules' are - if you care about those kind of things and want to hike this route you might want to check with a ranger when you get the map.

Hidden Gem  Sucess!

Honest I do have some lamentations on those people, East Bay Residents, who never go there or at least do a hike to get on Mission Peak. It is one of most beautiful places in the world, I tell you.
It took me 16 hours to complete the whole Ohlone Trail in a single day. It is knee wrecker trail but yet very rewarding.

Ohlone Trail   Sucess!

From Del Valle. This trail is AWESOME in the cool of winter! And this peak feels very remote, especially when fog lines the valley below. Highly recommend if your in the Bay Area and looking for adventure.

Route from Sunol  Sucess!

Beautiful green hills with clear skies for miles. Cows watched my wife and me as we took about 7 total hours to complete the trip. I disagree with the "anticlimactic" aspect of the peak; we found it quite nice. Nice view of the Sierras and surrounding ranges too.

Ohlone Trail from Del Valle  Sucess!

Good trip through the Ohlone wilderness trail with my younger bro. Started in Livermore at Del Valle, hike goes uphill steep and fast. Not much time to warm up, just get after it... Camped out at Maggie's, killer sunset up there with a bit of a haze from recent fires, but not too bad on the lungs. How many cows are on this trail?! The one with the white mohawk was giving me the stink eye. Thought he might charge. Would have made a tasty steak.

From Del Valle  Sucess!

Nice day with few other hikers out on the trail. Weather was near perfect. Views were little hazy. Due to the dry spring most wild flowers were gone for the season.
