...additional proof that all the fancy tech gadgets aren't necessary to enjoy the wilderness.

I appreciate that. To be honest, I do carry a GPS device, but about all I use it for (and know how to use it for) is getting altitude readings and recording route tracks. But when it comes to planning a route, yeah, I just like to grab a map or look at a picture, chart a course, and hope it works.
