Backdoor Route

Overview

The obvious way in to this mountain was gated and posted. In looking for another way in, Dennis and I studied the maps we had and found a way that worked and allowed us to go in on a non posted way.

Getting There & Route Description

See the front page for the majority of the information needed. After we found the posted gate on Mormon Basin Road (Cabin Gulch Road)we continued
on looking for someone we could talk with but found no one. We then consulted maps and noted a road that led up past a mine and became a 4WD road and looked like it saw very little use.

Access via the north side was found with no posted "no trespassing" signs but it did require crossing over one barb wire fence. We drove up a mine road that had two dwellings (occupied), one on each side of the road. We went early in the morning on a sunday morning before anyone was awake and drove up to this SPOT and parked. From there we made our way up a valley, crossed the fence and walked across a meadow to a road on the far side. Staying on the road, we dropped down to a junction and went northwest on the road to another junction where we turned northeast toward Pedro Mtn. On top of Pedro
mtn, we found a benchmark and immediately started back down. We retraced our route and made it back to our vehicle in an hour and a half. We figured the round trip from the vehicle was about 8 miles with perhaps
1500-1600 feet of elevation gain. When we drove out, we passed the residents of the two dwellings who looked at us very strangely as we drove past them. The mine road hooked back into the main road at this location. This road connected into the Mormon Basin Road which we followed back to I-84. Sorry about not having mileages written down but we had to drive up and down the roads for a bit before we found the road that gave us the northern access.

Miles from vehicles to Pedro Mtn - 4 miles with an elevation gain of 1500 feet which includes some ups and downs.

Time required for round trip....3 hours

One more comment

So, if this one is on private property, is it possible to get permission to access the highpoint? Most likely it is but at this time no phone number of the property owner is known. If anyone can add this information, I would welcome this information.

GPS'ing the highpoint will make it easier to locate by setting coordinates.
