Ruby and Cooper combo
Decided to head straight up from the Ruby parking area. Bit o' bushwacking etc, but I figured better than (more fun) taking the road to get to the other entry point. Once atop Ruby, skirted over to Cooper, then straight down a different gully (from the saddle between the two) which proved to be a bit of a beating. Trekked back up the road about a mile to get back to the car. Storm-looking clouds all around, some snow flurries, but otherwise great October day. (4.12 mi, 2350 total ascent for those that want info for that route)

with Grays south ridge
I parked at a snowbank shortly before the mine (should be passable within days - some 4wds made it through already). I hiked the road into Horseshoe Basin much further than I needed to (I was unnecessarily worried about some willows). I curled back around to catch the east ridge which took me to Ruby's false (NE) summit and walked over to Ruby. Then, I climbed up Grays south ridge, taking full advantage of the scrambling opportunities. The rock was pretty solid. I returned down Grays gentle SE ridge. Beautiful day!

Via Cooper Mountain from Peru Creek
Easy cruise on packed snow along Peru Creek drainage. Left the trail for some trail-breaking to gain the ridge of Cooper Mountain. Ridge to the summit of Cooper seemed a bit interminable. :) Waltzed in the wind over to the summit of Ruby Mountain, then down some chossy, loose ridge back into the basin. Saw a herd of bighorn ewes! What lovely and graceful creatures! Dinner at Czech restaurant in Georgetown afterward. With Senad and Otina.

another beautiful day in the mountains!
Thank goodness almost everyone likes to climb the higher, more well-known mountains, because this allowed me to enjoy some Colorado solitude at the summit of Ruby.

North ridge from Grays
Enjoyed a fine traverse between Grays and Ruby. This traverse is no harder than class 3 skirting a couple buttresses on the west side. North ridge of Ruby is a quick stroll from the saddle.
Solo in the fog with neighboring Cooper via the SW ridge. Road was not open yet, had to hike from the gate at Montezuma Road. SW Ridge up Cooper was completely dry.
I saw two choppers on this hike as well! Or...maybe it was the same chopper twice...

SE Ridge
My son and I had a relatively benign hike and of course we had the mountain to ourselves. It was not enough for the day so we headed over to Cooper Mountain. Interestingly it was covered with butterflies. Apparently they liked this particular summit to find potential mates.
Hiked up the Eastern Ridge. Slid down the snow patch on the South Eastern face. Gorgeous views from the summit and nice to have the entire Horseshoe basin to ourselves for the whole day, we didn't see another soul.
