Private Property Qualms

There has likely been a change in property ownership or a change in heart. The first gate above the ruts around 5700’ was closed with a posted private property, “no trespassing” sign and locked. We heeded the message and dragged our little car over to Ajax. No sign of the owners or cattle wranglers when we were out there. Looks like a beautiful hike, though! It seems one of the best ways for access from the Idaho side would be to gain the ridge near Freeman peak and head South West over gnarly terrain or drop into the miner lakes basin and attempt it from MT.

Smoky AND Fun!  Sucess!

The switchback road will get you fairly high up, depending on how many scratches you want to incur. I parked at 8,200' or so. After ditching the vehicle, it was a nice road walk to the mail truck, then a short climb up the ridge to the North Peak for a snack. Afterward, I traversed up high on the connecting ridge (class 3 scramble, not too difficult) to Middle Sacajawea to find the summit register. Lots of strange and entertaining items in there ;) Lovely views despite the smoke everywhere this Summer. If one would like to get on Monument Peak from the North Sacajawea Peak, it is just a ridge climb away. Just allot yourself enough time, that's all!

North Gully - Mail Truck Road  Sucess!

With some different options before me, I ended up picking a great line to the summit. In the process I discovered that climbing with your mind is just as fulfilling as the physical part.

August 18, 2007. Went back and traversed all three peaks starting with the South Summit and working my way north.
