Re: Wonderful!

Yep, it sure is. It was with mixed feelings that I took this picture though. It's a beautiful volcano, and the lama completes the picture, but at the same time I was a bit sad because only the day before we were so close - but we had to turn down from high camp because of very strong winds.

Re: Wonderful!

Yes...I can imagine how frustrating that must have felt...

Llama Country

I have never actually seen on in the mountains, were they friendly?

Re: Llama Country

Well, they are domesticated, but roam free. The ones in Sajama NP are both curious and apprehensive, so, when we were looking at them from a safe distance, some looked back at us, as if standing guard, while the rest kept on grazing.
Approaching them real slowly worked only up to a point, then they moved away. Not abruptly, but deliberately, as if to maintain a safe distance.
On another occasion, on the altiplano near the Cordillera Real, we encountered a herd with a handler and they were much more docile.

Re: beautiful picture!

It was September 2009 and it´s the SW side of the mountain, seen from the dirt road between Sajama village and the highway.
