first hike of the summer 2024
with Wasatch Mountain Club group. Clockwise (W to E) loop from Maples trailhead. These trails are heavily used by bikers - we dodged lots of them on this hike.

Best Ascent Off Trail is From the SW Side
Hiked to this peak while mapping invasive weeds on the Sardine Peak trail for the Forest Service. I ascended from the trail on the SW side of the peak, just east of the pines. The scrub here is short. Views from the top were beautiful. Definitely an overlooked gem.

Sardine Peak
A little embarrassed that I've never done this hike before and lived in Ogden most of my life, and skied Snowbasin for 39 years. Did this hike on a whim with my wife Phet and Son Liam. Beautiful hike. Mountain bikes have rutted out some significant sections of the trail. Beautiful afternoon with great views.

Fine fall hike, better views than suspected.
A really beautiful area in fall. Not quite peak colors yet. Aspen were still green. Unusually as last year at snowbasin it seemed to peak at this time. go for the loop hike that is available. The hike to the overlook is worth the fantastic views downcanyon, much more relief than I suspected. The views from the peak to Pineview are also good. The loop trail is great to hike, bike, and just the right grade for a great trailrun. You do have to do a short but fairly scruby bushwack to the top. Only a 100 yards or so from where we did it.

Sardine Peak
This was a great hike with some excellent views. We started out in the overflow parking of Snowbasin and headed north to Coldwater Creek Overlook. We quickly arived at the ridge line where the trail spilts to Sardine Peak or the Overlook. Wanting to hit this peak before we went exploring we trudged straight to the top. The last 300' to 400' being the rougher part of the trip. We couldn't find a good trail to the peak so we did our best and finding some deer trails to the top through all the scrub oak. A few scratches later and we arrived my GPS was reading 7495' I was shooting for 7500' but my friend wouldn't climb the pine.
The trip down was a nice slow trail with some really nice views of Pineview and many switchbacks down into the valley where the trail meets with the Wheeler Creek Trail. A small little climb back out of the valley and we where back in the parking lot. A nice long trail, we put out 8.3 miles in about 3.5 hours.
Great Evening Hike!!!

Late Oct trip up
Went up first nasty day of fall...the weather foul with rain, then sleet. This is definitly a Jekyl/Hyde hike; wide maintained trail ALMOST to the top, then no trail and a cold Bushwhack through thick wet scrub the final 200 yards to the summit...well worth doing!

Sardine Peak
I’ve been here several times. First hike up Sardine Peak was during winter 1997. It’s a great snowshoe and also nice during spring to see the flowers.

Great snow shoe!
If you have 2-3 hrs to kill, this is the perfect peak to climb. Great views into Ogden Canyon.
