Schoellenen gorge

Schoellenen gorge

Once coming from the south over St. Gotthard pass, you, so to speak, already crossed the Alps. No further big alpine pass lies ahead of you till the lakes of Luzern and further to the north. But north of Andermatt, there is a wild gorge which was long a difficult obstacle to the traffic. Only start of 13th century the first bridge was made in Schoellenen gorge. End of 16th century the first Teufelsbruecke (Devil's bridge) replaced it. Then the first tunnel was built and only after Napoleon wars the second Teufelsbruecke was build. Today we use the third Teufelsbruecke (the upper one on the picture), which goes directly in the tunnel. Summer, 2013.
