The Xinjiang Highway (yes! it's nothing but a dirt track for thousands of km) and Sirengou I soon to be hidden in a storm. Photo shot from the Aksai Chin, the disputed border area, which is considered to be one of the highest plateaus in the world. The road is at a stunning 5100m at this point.

Re: Mighty landscape

Thanks.
I had been to the area before and knew those peaks were there and then all of a sudden they came out of the storm clouds.

Re: Title

Most of the time the road is good enough for any "normal" car, but there are also plenty of river crossigns and areas where the road has been washed away. In these places you need a jeep or 4x4 to be safe. I guess you can pass most of these tricky places with a normal car as well, but the risk of damaging it or get stuck is big.
A huge majority of vehicles on this route is trucks, 4x4's or jeeps of some kind. I have met a few cars (like Audi 80's), but I don't know if they have traveled the full length of the Xinjiang Highway. The Southern route from Ali to Lhasa is way easier than the Northern one.

Hey Corax, thank you!!!

You have helped me identify this beautiful mountain. I cycled through the area in October '06;)

Re: Amazing picture

I had a look at the side that picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/drogpatravel/272893760/in/photostream/ shows, but the avalanche danger was too high I thought. Later that evening I heard a quite substantial one roaring down.

Oh, how I love to go there again and CLIMB IT!!!

Tell me when! I'm for sure in for it. I have a score to settle with Sirengou :)
