After crossing the plateau bowl of Shabaga, we head upriver through the Southern Siberian taiga of Shavla Valley. The glaciated peaks of North Chuyskie Belki are a long way ahead, and the heavy packs and trailbreaking are just the proper suffering for an expedition start. February 1985.
