Failed attempt

I’m gonna go back someday and try this one again. I made the mistake of taking the mining road on the south side of the spring. The one that is west of the other shorter mining road that leads to the mouth of the visible mine. Shortly after that one, is another well cut road on the southern slopes of the spring. That one ends at a big mine opening at about the 5,900’ mark. I could see the faint trail on the north side of the spring when I came back down that mining road, but it was too late in the day, and I had already covered too many miles to attempt it.

Beautiful!  Sucess!

Hike with a team of three. Gorgeous flowers. Some chin-stroking, map turning, and pointing trying to pick a route. Make sure to check out Shorty's Mine!

Badwater Summit & Badwater  Sucess!

I did this trip solo in the winter 12 years ago, in 2001 preparing for a big trip to So. America. I walked out to where I thought would be the lowest point in the U.S.Bad water -282'. Then I started my long trek up to summit and back to BADWATER.
I followed Hanaupah road until it ends, then cross-country up a few ridges to the base of Bennett Peak. Here, I picked up the regular trail to the summit.

I met some mid-west hikers camping by the summit where they gave me some water for the descent. Hiked down the same way i came up the ridges.

This is an all day and night roundtrip, about 15-16 hours. Be prepared with lots of water.

-282 to Summit  Sucess!

Parked vehicle on end of road in Hanapah Canyon, walked back down and out on the salt flats to the lowest place (-282') and then back up to the car where I picked up an ice axe and crampons for doing the summit. Definitely not the most enjoyable way to climb Telescope Peak. Was one of those 'can I do it' things when I was younger. Really didn't enjoy walking back up the road from Shorty's Well. Climbed directly up the 'east face' spir to the summit using crampons and ice axe.

Shortys to top and back  Sucess!

Used Mt. Bike from Shorty's Well to the narrows of Hanaupah Canyon, then hiked. Started at 4 am, reached Telescope peak at 1 pm, had lunch, and returned to Shorty's at 6:30 pm. Beautiful day, a little wind on the summit ridge, minor easily-avoidable ice on the final switchbacks. Below 0 to 11k+  Sucess!

A phenomenal day hike and completely unique. For weather purposes, the early Fall is the best time to go and even though there's a spring along the way, you can easily carry all the water you need. Leave Shorty's early and get a Lobotomy bock at Furnace Creek by sunset.

I might do a two day trip to the top next time, just because I found some amazing campgrounds along the way.

Shorty's Well - Telescope Peak - Mahogany Flat  Sucess!

3 of us started Shorty's Well on 2AM and made it to the Peak by 1:40PM.(took 11hours 40minutes). Actually, it was a slow pace.
Since we started early, temperature was cool enough and didn't drink much water. I drunk only 2.5 litter and didn't refill the water at spring. (I brought filter)
After half hour break at the peak, we descend to Mahogany Flat in 2hour 20 minutes.
Total 14.5 hour trip was successfull.

Will Do it again next year.

well->peak->Mahogony  Sucess!

Nice trip. I used Iodine tabs rather than a filter (ascorbic acid 45 min later to clear up taste); the water is milky but OK to drink. It's good to take headlamps, NSAIDS, and radios if you are meeting a party on the ridge.

"If trekking in the summer," -- what sort of insane person does this trip in the summer?

Long but worthwhile  Sucess!

Group of 15. The real fun started after we refilled water bottles and started climbing up the ridge. We were welcomed to the summit by a freak snow/hail storm and sub-freezing temperatures. From there, it was few more hours to Mahogany Flats.

Shorty’s Well to the peak and down to Mahogany Flat  Sucess!

Part of a group of 8 that day. I carried way too much water, we all did. The spring runs at least a half mile and you don't need more then 2L of water to get there. The work hard starts after the spring. It's just a nasty slog after that.
