Snake in the Grass

Snake in the Grass

Heard a strange buzz next to the fireroad on top of Big Rock Ridge and turned to make this purple tongued western rattler aquaintance before moving on. June 25, '11

Stunning

That is a fantastic photo Noondueler. Too bad for that one blade of grass, but the capture of the tongue is super.

Re: Stunning

Thanks Chad. Yeah, I would have moved the blade but of course...

These guys scare the crap out of me but I am mesmerized by their beauty. Great shot! CJ

Re: Scary !

Thanks CJ. I've only seen a couple in all my years hiking around the bay area. Sometimes I hike off in the weeds like this and after seeing this guy I think I'll be more cautious during the warm season.

Saw one when I worked

at Sequoia NP in 1995. It was eating a squirrel.

They really blend in with their surroundings,
except for the forked tongue. Great capture!

Re: Saw one when I worked

Thanks Larry. Rattler speak with forked tongue to color compliment the little pink flower in the grass.
