Re: How does this work?That's the normal way to do a self arrest on such snow: on feet. Ice axe and such tools are less efficient on this smooth spring snow. Feet are efficient in this position (without cramps of course !).
When being flat on snow the body works like a sled and the speed increase.

Re: How does this work?I see what you're saying. The person in question would just have to make sure to not flip over when doing it this way, as balance is quite possibly already impaired if the person is sliding uncontrolled.
