Climbed as a warm-up before doing a 3 day trip to climb Mount Ritter. Always wanted to do this with Stanislaus which looks very appealing. County Summit #13.
Started the climb via St. Mary's pass at 12:30pm. Some thunderheads developing. When approaching the summit, some drizzling rain, decently sized thunderhead above, and distant sounds of thunder. At the top, static electricity buzzing in my camera and hiking poles. Let's say I spent about only 10 seconds on the summit.
Great Independence day with unbeatable views.
Sonora Peak was my first peak in the area. I hiked up it from the pass and I was really blown away by the view. I remember Stanislaus Peak as being really cool to look at. I remember fishing on the Walker River on the drive down, and it was a long drive back to Auburn. It was in the early 1990's that I lived in the area.
Climbed this one several times. Amazing views with easy access via the Saint Mary's Pass trail. I used this peak to introduce my young sons to the joys of peakbagging.
3 more times, last time, August, '06
Sonora and Stanislaus peaks. Car to car 4.5 hours.
(October 2008) Heavy winds most of the way up. Nice view from the top.
(July 2011) From St. Mary's Pass. Leading up to the pass is mostly under snow, but the ridge is mostly open. Onto Stanislaus afterwards.
Climbed Sonora via PCT and southwest slopes. Steep scree slope. Stayed near trees to allow for more stable footing. Continued to Stanislaus Peak. Good Class Two climbing for the last 100ft.
Several springs nearby for water supply even in late August.
Quick, direct hike to a summit with wonderful views in all directions. Hiked with Wayne the day after Whitney.
Fun hike up sonora peak with my dad at age 8.
Great views of Emigrant Wilderness and Yosemite. The views to the north were heavily impacted by a fire in the Ebetts Pass area.
Climbed this along with Stanislaus Peak on a beautiful clear sunny day.
Missed the sunrise by a few minutes but it was an awesome early morning up there. Then went on to Stanislaus Pk. through fields of flowering lupines.
4th time up this peak, views are always great. This time came from Leavitt Peak down to the Pass and up via the PCT. A very loose route once leaving the trail, but short and direct.
"Easy" finish to a 8-peak 7-day Sierran jaunt. I say "easy" because I managed to take probably the two most difficult routes up and down this peak.. full of loose volcanic scree and steep gullies. I should've stuck with the use trails.
Nice views to the South.
saw two pikas on the way up!
Day two of a two peak weekend in California! Nice short hike, so we could drive back to civilization in order for me to catch a 6:00 a.m. flight the next morning.
Uneventful dayhike from SR 108 via St. Mary's Pass TH.
