South Thunder Mountain via Bells Canyon
Came up Bells Canyon on 10/08/2024. Camped above Upper Bells Canyon Reservoir, and made the ascent the next morning. Just a heads up, there is no overnight parking at the Bells Canyon trailheads as per their website.
Pioneer or Pie and Beer Day in Utah. Hot day even with a 4:45 am start. Clear day with no one else on the mountain. Took the Bells Canyon route which was steep but pleasant. Very smoky out so no far views but good views of the central and southern Wasatch.

The Beat out
https://youtu.be/EiLOuC17occ for a full trip report check out our video on you tube at peaks in the bag. South thunder has always been a favorite for me. From chip man to this peak the ridge is like no other. Not thats its really scrambling but the cliffs are insane. Lots of cool out cropping and dramatic vistas. saw some goats up here. The worst part is getting down to bells. It takes more route finding than one would expect.

Began from the Schoolhouse Springs trailhead, through the First Hamongog, then to the North Mountain Trail and up the Lake Hardy Trail. Scrambled from the north side of Lake Hardy, then to the saddle and up South Thunder. The views up there are amazing.

One of the 4 peaks up Coalpit Gulch to North Thunder to Lone Peak and down Jacobs Ladder in a day!
Did it as part of the Beatout. Scrambling along Lightning Ridge was fun. Amazing cliffs down into Hogum Gulch! Awesome views and good to be on the last summit of the day!

Made the summit as part of the Beatout Hike with David and Kendrick. The views were among the best I've seen in the Wasatch, thanks in part to some cool, cloudy weather. See "Misty Mountains" trip report for details.

South Thunder Mountain
I did the Beatout Route with Brandon and Kendrick. It was an incredibly scenic route. It was a long day but worth it. (Pfiefferhorn, Upwop, Chipman, South Thunder).

2nd time - From North Thunder This Time
Came over from North Thunder this time. That ridge has a couple tricky spots but we managed to make it with no major issues. Headed down to Alpine via schoolhouse springs for a Little Cottonwood to Alpine traverse. Long, slow day, but gorgeous up there!
Note: Although coming up from Alpine is long, I believe it is much easier than coming up from any of the Little Cottonwood routes.

From Pfeifferhorn
Fun climbing from the low-point of the ridge to where it turns north, then kind of a slog. Continued to North Thunder and down Hogum Creek, which is kind of backwards. Trip report.

slog
As part of WMC group (Sam & Glen) on The Beatout. Too warm for the snow - it was soft & unsupportable.
