https://youtu.be/EiLOuC17occ for a full trip report check out our video on you tube at peaks in the bag. South thunder has always been a favorite for me. From chip man to this peak the ridge is like no other. Not thats its really scrambling but the cliffs are insane. Lots of cool out cropping and dramatic vistas. saw some goats up here. The worst part is getting down to bells. It takes more route finding than one would expect.
Hiked up Bells and made it to the top and came down in the rain
4th and final of Beatout
What an awesome hike!
6 Miles, 5500' ele. gain
Part of the Beatout
Started in Alpine at the Lehi gate. Skirted up and around Lake Hardy. 6.4 miles to the top, in 3 hours 30 minutes. Coupled it with North Thunder.
Did as a two day with Brian T. Windy and rainy but worth it!
Began from the Schoolhouse Springs trailhead, through the First Hamongog, then to the North Mountain Trail and up the Lake Hardy Trail. Scrambled from the north side of Lake Hardy, then to the saddle and up South Thunder. The views up there are amazing.
Via Lake Hardy - 07/25/15
One of the 4 peaks up Coalpit Gulch to North Thunder to Lone Peak and down Jacobs Ladder in a day!
Did it as part of the Beatout. Scrambling along Lightning Ridge was fun. Amazing cliffs down into Hogum Gulch! Awesome views and good to be on the last summit of the day!
Made the summit as part of the Beatout Hike with David and Kendrick. The views were among the best I've seen in the Wasatch, thanks in part to some cool, cloudy weather. See "Misty Mountains" trip report for details.
I did the Beatout Route with Brandon and Kendrick. It was an incredibly scenic route. It was a long day but worth it. (Pfiefferhorn, Upwop, Chipman, South Thunder).
Traverse from Lone Peak and Upper Bells
Came over from North Thunder this time. That ridge has a couple tricky spots but we managed to make it with no major issues. Headed down to Alpine via schoolhouse springs for a Little Cottonwood to Alpine traverse. Long, slow day, but gorgeous up there!
Note: Although coming up from Alpine is long, I believe it is much easier than coming up from any of the Little Cottonwood routes.
8/4/13 - WMC Summer Beatout Trip report
6/1/13 - Hike w/ WMC group. 5 hours up, 3+ down. Took a wrong turn the road walk on the way down and had to find a faint trail to get us back on the correct road. Trip report
Fun climbing from the low-point of the ridge to where it turns north, then kind of a slog. Continued to North Thunder and down Hogum Creek, which is kind of backwards. Trip report.
As part of WMC group (Sam & Glen) on The Beatout. Too warm for the snow - it was soft & unsupportable.
Ran up from Alpine via Schoolhouse Springs with Craig. Very runnable most of the way up. We did detour down to Lake Hardy (pretty amazing), but should have stayed up and to the left about a 1/4 mile before the lake instead of dropping down to the lake. We were intending to go on to North Thunder but 50+ mph winds and cold freezing hand made it a death wish. I was really disappointed to not make it over to North Thunder but we had a BLAST bombing down the mountain on the way down.
Very hazy due to wildfires so the views were limited but still good.
8/2/2015- Via Coalpit Gulch to North Thunder and traverse to South Thunder. Descent in to Bells Canyon.
8/4/2013 Final peak on the Beatout route. Awesome route, great day.
5/11/2013 With the WMC as part of the Beatout.
10/7/2012 Via Bells Canyon with the Wastach Mountain Club. It is amazing the work the Forest Service has done on the trail from the meadow to Upper Bell Reservoir. No issue with route finding all the way to the upper reservoir.
9/3/2012 Via Bells Canyon
6/3/2012 As part of the Beatout Hike with the WMC.
