Via Sultan loop
A chill hill. With Kelly.
With Ryan Draft. via W Turkshead. On to Turks Head & Sultan. Dropped off Sultan's NE shoulder [one tricky notch to negotiate] to Rt 550 close to Silverton, where passing motorists were definitely not interested in giving us a lift up the road. Heavy early afternoon rain made the prospect of walking 7 mi up the road somewhat unattractive. Hmm. We ended up going into to Silverton and *paying* someone to drive us up to Molas pass. Still, a nice set of ridges.
Started this hike around 11:30am. After not understanding the approach beta i just schwacked through willows after two or three switch backs on the Colorado Trail from Little Molas Lake. There was a route..ish. Spencer Peak was neat, the ridge down to Grand Turk was somewhat sketch with new, wind blown snow. Grand Turk is an easy jaunt from Spencer. Sultan proved to be the more tiresome of the three. Awesome summits with great views of the San Juan's. I then traversed back, under Grand Turk, over Spencer and then back into the Molas Creek drainage. 4.5 hrs round trip
Saw a cool gray fox on the summit
with Sultan and Grand Turk
nice hike with Duchess from Little Molas Lake, en route to Grand Turk and Sultan.
There is a register on that peak. Contents are a bit soggy.
On the way to Grand Turk and Sultan. Trip report.
Better late than never. Great climbing with friends.
This was a great little peak on the way to Grand Turk and Sultan, with an excellent group of folks. What an awesome day in the San Juans it was!
Perfect weather with perfect company. Thanks for submitting this page.
Climbed as part of the SP Summer Gathering 2008. At the time the peak had not been officially named, we were glad we took the extra effort to go over this "unnamed bump".
Hiked a big loop over "West Turkshead Peak", Spencer Peak, Grand Turk, Sultan Mountain, Bear Mountain, UN 13042 & 12764 on a beautiful late summer day.
I summitted this mountain right before it was officially named. We enjoyed amazing weather for summer in the San Juans and the company could not have been beat! The SP Colorado Summer Gathering was a blast! (Thank you Aaron for organizing.)
