Stimpy at the Summit of Mount Big Chief

Stimpy at the Summit of Mount Big Chief

My dog Stimpy enjoys the breeze at the Summit of Mount Big Chief.
Bold, athletic dogs on solid voice command can make the summit of Mount Big Chief.
Other dogs may need to wait with a human climbing companion while their master summits.

Dawgs!

I used to hate encountering dogs on the trails. Then I started hiking with a friend who always brought his dog along--and I found out how much FUN it is to hike with a dog.

Re: Dawgs!

Bob,

My husband and I have 4 dogs (had 5 until recently; had to put the oldest down). And we STILL hate encountering dogs on the trail! LOL!

Our dogs are on-leash for all of our hikes with the exception of scrambling sections that would put us at risk having a dog on leash. That's where voice command comes in.

Hiking with a well-behaved, trained dog is a joy. Encountering aggressive, obnoxious wildebeasts owned by irresponsible owners is a nightmare.

So, honestly, I can see it both ways. I understand how you used to hate running into trail dogs...I also know the joys of sharing the mountains with a canine companion.

PS: One of these days, the husband and I will take up his sister's offer to borrow her cabin near Blood Mountain in Northern Georgia. We'll look you and your family up when we're in the area. You and my husband (Birmingham, Alabama native) can say "fixin ta" and "Usta you could" and "might shudda" and tell stories about hiking off-trail in your snake boots, eating Moonpies and drinking RC Cola. ;)
