Isn't this whereback in the late 1970s, a family was
having a picnic in this area, and
an avalanche came down on top of
them? I remember reading something
about that. Great beta!

Re: Isn't this whereWow, I haven’t heard about that story. The rock climbing history is this area is well known. There are several routes located around the island and on the quartzite cliffs in the photo. In winter, some ice forms on these walls too.

that fell upon those unfortunate people.
I need to look it up in the archives.
The road was closed for a long time.

Re: Isn't this whereYes, I know about that accident. It was highly publicized on the local news. That is actually located across the canyon from Storm Mountain Picnic Area. A group of us from the Wasatch Mountain Club went up that same route called Stairs Gulch. We didn’t have any problems but it is definitely a place where you should be careful of avalanches. Sadly, the people that died were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
