3 of us did Shorty's Well (-250 ft) to Telescope Peak Hike. It took us 11 hours 40 minutes to the Peak (it was slow) and another 2.5 hours to the Mahogany Flat. Total Elevation gain was 12,000 ft. Total Distans was 22 mile (16 miles up and 6 mile down)
My Trip Photo Album
One trip is probably the most enjoyable.
The perfect storm of good weather, good friends and an all around good day! Tagged with four first timers and it was FANTASTIC to see it through their eyes and have them be in such good spirits. Hopefully I flipped a switch in a couple of them. Super mega good day!!
Nice 14-mi. dayhike! It was a little windy for us, but still an enjoyable hike! Great views & even a summit sign to hold up for our pictures, was in the amo-box.
We drove from the Charcoal Kilns to Mahogony Flat which is at an elevation of 8133’. Starting at Mahogony Flat we hiked from Bennett Peak (9980’), to Telescope Peak 11409’, and then to Rogers Peak 9945’. The hike was about 15 or 16 miles long, and the elevation gain was about 4400’.
Day-hiked from Mahogany Flats. Great hike and the weather was perfect.....high's in the 70's, lows in the 50's, not a cloud in the sky.
Great hike and better the second time because the pain wasn't a suprise.
We did this as an overnight hike. Started at Thorndike campground 0.8 miles and 600 feet elev below the trailhead because we were told our 2WD sedan wouldn't make the drive to Mahogany Flat, although it would have done just fine. Camped at beautiful Arcane Meadows 2.5 miles up from the trailhead on a cloudy and completely windless night. Went to the summit and returned to Thorndike the next day. Temps were in the 50s and 60s and there is no snow left on the trail. Great hike!
This has to be one of the very best dayhikes in California. We camped on the shoulder a couple of miles from the summit.
First DPS peak!
With my wife this was our second ascent of Telescope, this time as an overnight and a great way to do this fantastic peak. Left North Orange County at 6 am, after arrived at Mahogany Flats trailhead about Noon, backpacked to the ridgeline about 2/3 of the way, setup camp, hiked to the summit, returned to camp for dinner. Up at about dawn, packed up and hiked out.
Road closed at the kilns adding a couple of miles each way. Nice snow climb at the end. Climbed Bennett on the return but bypassed Rodger due to partner fatigue. Pictures
Wonderful day to climb Rogers, Bennet, and then Telescope. Windy (of course), probably 20 degree chill, but sunny. Very fun!
Standard trail from Mohogany Flat. Very clear, great views from the San Bernadinos to White Mtn. Peak and east to the Spring Mtns. west of Las Vegas.
Did Telescope Peak a couple of years ago in September with my buddy Richard after camping a Mahogany Flats. It was beautiful sunny days, not too hot, with a cool breeze on top (had tp put my fleece on. I forgot to re-apply my sunscreen and burned my legs pretty badly (the skin peeled off in one piece a week later). We slept at Mahogany the night after the climb and had to bail early in the morning (still dark) when a really bad storm came in. Some dude we met on our way down the day before wanted to camp out on top to watch the stars. Hope he was okay in the storm.
for a hike from Mahogany Flats......Easy summit....Views were great except for a little haze..Unable to see Mt. Whitney....Perfect time of year for a hike at altitude in Death Valley.......But it was HOT back down below sea level......Also, something in the air (pollen?) made my skin welt and eyes swell......Had to get some Benadryl at Stove Pipe Wells.......Great hike overall.
did it from Shorty's Well and attempted some unknown West Ridge.
After seeing Telescope from Badwater, I've wanted to do this peak for a decade or so. I finally took the easy stroll up to the top from Mahogany Flats this summer. Whew, hot!
I have been up Telescope several times in the past thirty years by different routes, once from near Bad Water (see trip report) and as strange this this may sound, while I was there as a seasonal ranger, we put on a 3-day snow rescue course for rangers in the Mahogany Flats area (I built an igloo there for sleeping in) and climbed Telescope later. Remarkable area.
Camped the night before at Mahogany Flats, 4 hours up and 3 hours down the next day. Summit was surrounded by clouds so we didn't get to see the awesome view.
