Re: Love these....

Thanks a lot! That was indeed a special day on which I took at least two hundred photos in total, and even though I've put already a great deal of them here - check out my trip report "sunset and sunrise above the clouds on the Untersberg" -, I still hit every now and then on a photo where I think "would be worth posting"!
Cheers,
Eric

Re: Love these....

Ah... I was wondering if this was the same trip as your top photo. I'll check out the report. Haven't seen it yet.

You were wise to take a couple hundred photos. All very good, and not just a bunch of identical shots too.

Re: Love these....

BTW- it is also moments like these that remind me the POTD is a bit random. Nothing against those that are there, but for this to only have 4 votes so far shows some can get overlooked too.

Re: Love these....

Thanks!!!!!!! :-))

If you knew how many pics I've seen in other member's galleries as well, thinking exactly the same thing...

My tip is: re-post photos the quality of which one is convinced of, if it's obvious that they have become "invisible". What happens then is oftentimes simply amazing...

Re: Love these....

I don't think the purpose of SP is to get POD or POW. I completely disagree with your tip of re-posting pictures just to gather more votes. It happens already too often that I recognize the same pic posted again seemingly because the author was not happy with how many votes it got. It really bothers me a lot and is quite annoying. If somebody is interested in the area, your album, your report or whatever, they will find the picture and find it useful. POD and POW have in most cases nothing to do with photographic quality anyways.

Re: Love these....

I respect your opinion, though just let me tell you that it never was my PURPOSE to get POD or POW...the couple of times it happened to me I was completely amazed, I assure you! What I'm hinting at is far less the "votes" issue and more the "hits" - I also look at those, not just the votes, after all, I'm not some sort of a "mountebank" ;-))! - and when it's obvious that people just simply haven't seen a picture I've posted, votes or no votes, then I think it's not such a condemnable idea to repost it, deleting the old version of course.
As to your statement that POD and POW have in most cases nothing to do with photographic quality - I think quite a lot of people on SP, those who posted the pictures that became POD or POW as well as all the people who gave their votes on these, could be taken aback by that sort of a remark, and justly so! So far - okay, I've only been active on SP since Oct. 2009, but all the same - nearly all the POD's and POW's I've seen really were outstanding - also yours, Guido!! I find it would be decent of you to at least take back that last sentence of yours, if not for my sake, then at least in order not to do injustice to others.
Many greetings and best wishes to you from Salzburg,
Eric

P.S.: I can see by the amount of votes on this picture of mine it ain't gonna be Photo of the Day - sob sob!!! ;-))

Re: Love these....

Interesting conversation going on here- so maybe I'll chime in too! :)

I agree with over 90% of what both of you have said. I've never gotten POTD, but I've never posted one thinking I would either. Actually was second (and third) one day this week, but that was mostly due to not many folks posting that day. I was surprised they were even close, they weren't that amazing, just memorable pictures to me that I liked personally. More to the point: There have been a couple times where I thought one of mine was better, and plenty of times where I KNEW someone else's was better, but that's just the way it is. POTD is not the BEST photo of the day, it's one that got the most votes, influenced by things like who posted it, what time, who posted what else at what time, and a dozen other things. Agree with Eric that usually they are outstanding, but would have to say sometimes they certainly are not, and an outstanding one goes unnoticed.

I've never reposted anything, but could imagine I might if a favorite of mine seemed to be buried with only a couple votes. Never would repost as a goal of getting POTD, but maybe just so it has a chance to be on the first page or top 12 of a mountain page, so others can see it. But as I said, have never felt the need to do it.

To Guido's point, I do find it a very irritating when folks ONLY seem to be trying to get POTD. I simply don't vote on those folks pictures. Putting up exactly one photo a day always, and having no mountain, area, or other pages, like you said, that is not the purpose of SP. It seems clear to me Eric isn't one of those folks. Looking at the dates on some of these Untersberg pics, he certainly could have gotten more as POTD if he hadn't posted some of them on the same day as others. Plus he's got some mountain pages of his own.

Not intending to drag someone else into this, but read the comments on this POTD. True, it would be annoying if this was frequent. But to do it once and admit to it is much more funny than annoying, and I think again helps to show it has randomness, and folks should not get too big a head or hardcore about the scores they receive.

Re: Love these....

So to show my point... of the randomness... let's take a look at October 16, 2009.

Is this POTD better than this one or this one posted the same day? Some may think so, but IMHO I don't. It's subjective though. And BTW posted mine around 8:00 PM, POTD was at 1:46 AM, so I guess he was gunning for it.

Re: Love these....

@mrchad9: Thanks mrchad - you're a pal!:-)

@SoCalHiker: All of this is true, I completely agree, also with the "random factor", but all of this petty stuff is not the reason why I'm on SP. If this is to become some sort of a competition or "contest of personal value" - oh well, then I stand up, turn off the light, and leave.

I did not imply that. I just wanted to voice my opinion about your "tip" of re-posting pictures to get more votes.

Re: Love these....

Dear Guido, if you read my first message carefully over again, you'll see that I didn't even so much as add the word "votes" in what I answered to mrchad9. I said: "when it's obvious that they have become invisible", meaning: maybe a couple of people saw them, whether they voted or not, and then, due to a whole lot of new postings from other people the same day, the pictures got submerged. As I say, before deciding to re-post a photo "in order to grub more votes", look at the amount of hits. If it's 200 hits and only 2 votes, oh well, then the case is pretty clear, I would say! I'm not going to use any drag-and-drop techniques here, just go back to my first reply to mrchad9, exactly the one you reacted so strongly to, and read it again.
Also, as you and mrchad9 were discussing the fact that people oftentimes post their photos without any reference whatsoever to any mountain or area page - look through my entire gallery of meanwhile 709 pictures and tell me if you find one, just one single photo without reference to a mountain or area page or an album that is itself attached to a mountain or area page. This is something I always take great care of, knowing fully well how annoying it is to see a photo without even the slightest indication - not even so much as a latitude/longitude! - of where it was taken and what it's showing! This sort of postings, given it's a good pic, I usually comment with "Nice photo, but...ubi est?"
In this sense, a warm "Servus aus Österreich", and many greetings to you,
Eric

Re: Unique

I've just finished reading Bruno_Tibet's article (identical with the link SoCalHiker gave on this page), which I find fantastic and absolutely hilarious! Genial humor! And I had just as much of a ball reading all the comments that were posted to Bruno as well! Yes, I face it, a little bit of this "human nature", as Bruno put it, is in us all...;-))))

What I'm supposed to say now, in certain peoples eyes: "The purpose of SP is not to obtain votes or POTD or POTW." (with a guru's face expression)

What I say despite certain people's expectations: Thanks - it's nice to hear this! :-))))

Many greetings to you, EastKing, and a warm "Servus aus Salzburg",
