The Emmons glacier on fire

The Emmons glacier on fire

Sunrise on Rainier on August 27th, 2006. Taken from just over 12000 ft right above the Disappointment Cleaver. To get a sense of scale, view a larger sized image where you can see dots (climbers) to the right of the prominent ice tower in the middle.

Re: Beautiful colours!

It was a great day, and very long too. Watching the sun rise and light the Emmons glacier on fire was one of the most spectacular sights I'd ever seen.

Cor blimey

You're definitely right about the sense of scale, did you know the other climbers were there when you took the shot?

I came down Emmons...

in a snowstorm, after having climbed Liberty Ridge. Your photo is fantastic.
Happy climbing,
Marc
