The Forbes Route

The Forbes Route

The Forbes Route uses the 'Great Ramp' seen in the center from the right to the left and then climbs the Ladder Pitch when the ramp ends. From there it goes up the Chockstone Gully to the skyline notch left of summit and up scrambling slopes to the top.

Not the Forbes Route

What you describe is the old trail, first built in the late 1930s. The Great Ramp was the site of the "first ladder," still in place in 1956, when I first climbed Babo.

The Forbes Route is reached from the North Saddle, two pitches before joining the second ladder pitch. The route is well described in Dr. Forbes diary, preserved at the Pioneer Historical Society in Tucson. I had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Forbes in 1959 -quite a guy!
