The Great Gorge

The Great Gorge

May 29th, 2006 - Looking down the Great Gorge of the Ruth Glacier from The Gateway, which is at the edge of the Ruth Amphitheater. The gorge is 1 mile wide and 3,000 ft deep, flanked by peaks rising 4,000-5,000 feet above the Ruth Glacier. The peaks to the left are London Tower (left) and Werewold Tower (along same ridgeline). Mt Church has a commanding presence at the turn in the glacier (center), followed by the fluted face of Mt Johnson (right). The huge rock face in the right of the photo is the lower part of the east face of Mt Dickey, a 4,500 ft tall granite big-wall.
