The intricate layers in these rocks (seen in the southern end of Utah's
Cockscomb escarpment), are composed of giant dunes deposited 150
million yrs. ago during the Jurassic Period of geologic time.
During the Jurassic, the region that would eventually become the Colorado
Plateau was part of a vast Sahara-like desert along the entire west coast
of North America.
As you enter the smoothly sculpted landscape from the trailhead at
5,000' Wire Pass, the patterns in the buttes create a three-dimensional
FEAST for the EYES.
The Martian Chronicles, or just a DREAM? You be the judge, Judy!
