The Spiral Jetty

The Spiral Jetty

Yep, that's me. The photo was taken by Jeana Stuart at the Spiral Jetty, a piece of environmental art by Robert Smithson. It was constructed in 1970 and is only visible when the water level in the Great Salt Lake is low. If you click on the lat/lon link on the right side of the page and zoom in very tightly, you can get a pretty good look at it.

So, so cool

With the water looking like a sunset on a ridge and the rocks and spots behind you looking like they're fading away into oblivion, the result is just a gorgeous and disorienting shot. Wonderful!

Re: So, so cool

Thanks for the compliment! You know, it wasn't much different in person - it was hard to distinguish between the sky and the water and the water moved in kind of a strange, oily way. All of the rocks along the shoreline had caps of salt crystals on them about 5 inches thick and the "sand" was actually salt. Very surreal.

Awesome photo ...

When I lived in northern UT during the early
1980s, the Great Salt Lake was at its highest
levels, so I never did notice this fine piece
of environmental art.
