The Sublime Abyss ...

The Sublime Abyss ...

Close-up view of Grand Canyon's south rim, looking north from the Grandview Trail. The colours are natural throughout "THE ABYSS." To the upper left, Grandview Point sits at an elevation of 7,400ft. The dominant plant species on this side of the canyon are Colorado Pinyon pine(Pinus edulis) and Utah Juniper(Juniperus osteosperma), which maintain a tenuous foothold on the Canyon's walls. Further up, one can find Ponderosa pine(Pinus ponderosa) and Gambel Oak(Quercus gambelii) growing across the Coconino Plateau. Several animals commonly found are Pinyon Mouse, Desert Cottontail, Rock Squirrel, Cliff Chipmunk, Gray Fox, Mule Deer, Pinyon Jay and Spiny Lizard. Image scanned from 35mm photo, taken in August of 1991. There was no water along the trail; but a relible source is found at Cottonwood Creek or Hance Creek, about 2 hours down. Suggest this hike be done in October.
