This is my sister Dolores Muir learning to rapell on Elk Mountain, Oklahoma in the early 1970s. At that time we knew nothing about ascenders or rope brakes. We just wrapped the rope around the base of the carabiner like some of the old Army training manuals showed. Most of our friends thought we were crazy and our mother prayed for us, but we survived and have gone on to climbing higher in other parts of the world.
