This pic demonstrates (see footprint), the soil conditions in the Badlands of Death Valley NP. Once the top crusty layer is punctured, the soil is quite powdery and very difficult to gain purchase in. See the Manly Beacon page for a geological history of the Badlands. 12-28-03
