This woman, a "Chola", is on...

This woman, a "Chola", is on better shape than many climbers....one like her can be your porter. The cholas and cholos (men) are people of the country side. The term is used in Bolivia and Peru to refer to people from the Aymara and Quechua, who are the main native communities, and it can have negative connotations. The outfit was imposed to women by a Spanish Viceroy in the 17th century, and little had changed on it. The outfit symbolizes for many of these women honor, pride and a sense of belonging to their local communities.
