Those Who Came Before

Those Who Came Before

Dark basaltic cliffs near Arizona's Agua Fria River hold rock art or petroglyphs, proof of an ancient civilization populating this area between 1250 - 1450 AD. These historic etchings became protected when 71,000-acres of land (south of Camp Verde, Arizona) became Agua Fria National Monument 10 years ago. Nobody knows who carved these etchings. It's thought that the Sinagua people shifted their territory to AZ's lower elevations following the eruption of the Sunset Crater volcano in 1067 AD. Whoever they were, those who came before called this area home, before they disappeared completely after 1450 AD. As represented in these etchings, Arizona's climate (at that time) supported a very healthy number of elk and deer, and these animals became living symbols for "those who came before."
