Quarter bagel

with some dried bananas and some leftovers? Well, at least that sounds like a safe meal. Thank for the up-close look at Vancouver Island; the closest that I've been is driving on the Sea to Sky highway. A very beautiful corner of the world!

Re: Quarter bagel

Thanks CM. It was actually quite tasty and I've now added it to my standard backcountry repetoire. Except for upping the proportions of course.

Cheers,

Martin

Ps The Sea to Sky Highway we think of as eastern Canada. lol

An epic adventure indeed!

Excellent report! Thanks for putting in the effort. Now I'm even more intrigued by the Island. I've already had the WCT on my long-term list, but the Hinde has brought the area into a whole new light. I'll make the trip from Portland one of these days.

Re: An epic adventure indeed!

Thanks Jim. Always worth the effort when it's appreciated and people find the product useful.

If your preference is REAL wilderness, don't do the WCT. It's a packaged "experience" these days for European tourists to go home and say how brave they were. The early nineties were the last time the WCT was worth doing. Go do the Nootka Trail instead. Much closer to what a wilderness coastal hike should be like and what the WCT used to be like.

Do put the Hinde on your list - or even something like Augerpoint Mountain for a real taste of VI wilderness.

Cheers,

Martin

Efforts valued or not

I'd like to also add some words to this discussion.
First, Martin, you have created a great page, judged from optical impression. 2nd, it is still on my list of "to be read"s.
It is just a matter of time, and for me, if I think a page is very worth reading, probability is high that it will stay quite a time on that list, because then I don't want to just scan it over in a few minutes but read it thoroughly. So this does not mean that your post has not been noticed.
I made a somewhat similar experience when I posted my High Sinai TR. It made it on the front page, but I had hoped for more and deeper comments, and on some points even an interesting discussion ...
but I think for many SPers time is a point. Normally, I can't grant myself more than half an hour per day of SP time, and this is not much especially when I'm also posting.

Cheers
Reinhard

Re: Efforts valued or not

Hi. Hope you can eventually get round to reading the TR. There's a lot of it I know. But if you only look at the pictures and it encourages you to come and climb our mountains, I'll be perfectly happy.

I might have gone off a bit half cocked wrt my point abour TR's being neglected. In the end this one was on the "featured" list for a week and a half and probably got more attention than it deserved not less. Without that, however, I'm not so sure. The initial math was quite indisputable. The Hinde mountain page got 20+ votes in the first few hours and the route page, which took less than an hour to write and post, got 7 instant votes to the TR's 1.

My point in all this is the emphasis that SP places on TR's. And I still say that it should be on mountain pages - clearly the reading choice of most members. If you're posting a TR do it for yourself, family and friends. If anyone else reads it, that's a bonus.

Cheers,

Martin

Excellent Report

Good details and beautiful pictures. Wish I were there now :) Hopefully this summer though. You have inspired myself and two hiking friends to make the journey. When we get back I will be sure to share the scenery with the group.

Re: Excellent Report

Thanks Dan. Feel free to contact me nearer your departure date and I'll give you all the beta.

Lots more VI peaks on SummitPost - not always under my TR's - sometimes under my "Mountains & Rocks"

I live near Sidney too. Who do you work for? My truck always needs work. (Just say it ain't Sidney Tire.)

Cheers,

Martin

Thanks!

Thanks so much for taking the time to post a well written report on a great Vancouver Island mountain. I grew up on Vancouver Island and really miss the hiking scene there. It really takes you back reading about others trips. I live in Calgary right now, but plan to go back this Christmas and do Albert Edward.

Re: couldn't

I wouldn't worry to much about that. Main thing is that you read the page and found it useful. That's what it's for!

Many thanks for all your nice comments. Have a great (and safe) trip to the Hinde this summer. I'll likely be doing it again myself in September.

Cheers, Martin

Great read...

Enjoyed your take on the climb... Having recently got the "seeking the peak" bug, I look forward to this climb one day. It's on the list! Your effort in writing this is greatly appreciated... Pictures are awesome as well... Thank you.... M
