Great trip report. I climbed Needle with my dad also via the cottenwood drainage June 05. There may have been as much snow in the south couloir as your shots, seemed dry indeed. We didnt have the daring to attempt the traverse, much less in winter. What a great Thursday morning idea. Thanks for sharing your climb.
I am heading home to Colorado in mid-March and hoping to do the traverse. Your trip report is good beta. Hope the snowpack is in condition in March like it seems to have been for you!
Thanks for the positive comments, all! There is one positive side to experiencing a super dry winter in the southwest as in a more normal winter I wouldn't have considered this outing.
I did the Needle about 5 five years ago and didn't have the conojes to commence the rappel off the summit. It ended up being an early day back to camp, and I suppose one of these days I will have to get back down there and do the traverse. Thanks for the great report --- it gives me something to think about!
