Route Climbed: Tumalo Mountain Trail Date Climbed: October 2002  Sucess!

The Tumalo Mountain Trail was a fun little hike to the summit. The trail went through forest first, then into a sparsely-forested high-elevation area, with a few pines that were bent over from the high winds that frequent the area. The trail got steep at the very end. At the summit, it was quite windy, and there were small patches of snow. The view of Bachelor and Broken Top and the Sisters was great. You can see the Tumalo Creek Canyon from the summit, and, just south of Broken Top, Ball Butte. It took me about 50 minutes to reach the summit. I recommend this climb.

Hiked this one with my buddy Bill from Spokane. Forgot to get a Sno-Park Pass and the cops were in the lot ticketing people so we cut back to the Sunrise Lodge lot, parked and then hiked back to the trailhead. Pretty easy climb in blue skies. Would have been great to ski down the steep back side but we hadn't brought skis. Very cold and windy up top but awesome views of all the central Cascades.

One word of advice, drive extremely slow on Cascade Lakes Highway in winter as there is tons of black ice. Mt. Bachelor shades the road in the afternoon and all the melt on the road freezes soon after. I lost control of my Jeep and did a 360 across the other lane into a snowbank and then was bounced back across both lanes into the snowbank on the other side of the road. Luckily no one was coming towards me or we would have been in bad shape. Thank God there's lots of good beer in Bend because I needed it when I got there.
