Turkey Vulture

Turkey Vulture

This bird was sitting by the side of the road when we came around the corner. It has a wingspan of about six feet. It's a big bird.

Turkey Vulture

Seems to match the underside color pattern of your bird. Wingspan 68in to 72in.

See them all the time

and they congregate in huge numbers around our neighborhood (semi-rural). They like the old, tall trees in our neighborhood and I worry about the safety of kittens and rabbits! Wish they would aim for a few groundhogs destroying my yard though!

Re: See them all the time

No worries Kathy. I'm coming over with my shot gun.
Just kidding, I don't have one. I'm sorry your vultures are a concern, but they sure are impressive while flying.

Re: See them all the time

I frequently see them flying circles over the
desert.

I'm not a buzzard expert, but I don't think
Kathy has to worry. They're strictly scavengers, and only eat things that are already DEAD, such as road kill and such.

Who wants anchovies on their road pizza ???
: )))

Re: See them all the time

Thanks Larry! I don't really worry. They are impressive creatures when they are flying.

And save the anchovies for my husband; he's the big fan in our house!

Re: See them all the time

Marc - I only worry about the little kittens and critters around here but you're right; the vultures like things that aren't moving anymore yet they circle endlessly here.

And I agree about the beauty; at a distance they are such graceful flyers. They remind me of eagles!)

(You're still welcome to come over and git a few groundhogs though anytime!!!
